Why this side

Sunrise, not sunset

Canggu, Seminyak and Uluwatu all face west. Saba faces southeast. That is geography, not marketing, and it makes for a different day: the light arrives over the ocean in the morning and the afternoon stays soft.

The sand here is black volcanic, the ocean is open, and there is almost nobody on it. Sunrise horse riding runs directly off the beach. It is a walk from the villas, not a drive.

Nearby

What is actually here

Four things bring people to this coast. All of them are a short drive from the gate.

Saba Beach
A walk away

Saba Beach

Black volcanic sand and open ocean. Sunrise horse riding runs off the sand, and the village itself holds 54 documented heritage objects, two of them under formal protection.

Bali Safari and Marine Park
5 minutes

Bali Safari & Marine Park

Roughly 40 hectares across the neighbouring villages, around 1,000 animals, night safaris and its own theatre. For a family staying here it is a five-minute drive, not a day trip.

Keramas
5–7 km west

Keramas

A World Surf League Championship Tour venue. A reef right-hander holding three to ten feet, and the only floodlit night surfing on the island.

Sanur
25–30 minutes

Sanur

Calm shallow water, restaurants, and the fast boats to Nusa Penida and the Gilis. Reached on the Ida Bagus Mantra bypass without going near Ubud traffic.

Getting here

The bypass is what
makes this coast work

The Ida Bagus Mantra bypass runs along this side of the island and connects Saba to Sanur and Denpasar without passing through Ubud. That is the whole reason a quiet village 30 minutes from Ubud is also 25 minutes from a beach club and an hour from the airport.

A new coastal access road between the inland villages and the beach has been formally proposed by local leaders.

Drive times are estimates and depend on traffic and time of day.

Worth knowing

What Saba is not

Saba is quiet because not much happens here. There is no beach club within walking distance, no restaurant scene, no coworking, and no shopping. For those you drive 15 to 25 minutes to Keramas or Sanur.

That suits couples, families, surfers heading to Keramas, and longer-stay visitors who want space and quiet within reach of everything. It does not suit someone who wants Canggu, and we would rather say so now than have a guest find out after they arrive.

The east coast is also not the boom that gets advertised. Bali received 3,203,156 foreign arrivals in the first half of 2026, down 2.42% on the year before. The argument for this coast is that it is quiet, well connected and priced sensibly, which is an argument that survives being checked.
